Troubleshoot an MCP connection
If an AI client can no longer use Operately, use this guide to identify the error and restore access. For first-time setup, see Connect an AI client with MCP.
Find your error#
Section titled “Find your error#”Check which server the error names. An authentication error alone does not mean Operately is down.
| What you see | What to do in your AI client |
|---|---|
401, unauthorized, or invalid_token when using Operately | Check the server URL, then sign in to the Operately connection again. |
invalid_grant | Start authorization again from the client. Its authorization code or refresh credential was rejected. |
| Login succeeds, but the same chat still fails | Restart the connection or app, then start a new chat. The existing chat may still hold old credentials. |
| “Unauthenticated at startup” | Sign in to the named server again. |
| You revoked the connection in Operately | Start authorization again from the client if you want to restore access. The old credentials no longer work. |
In Operately: inspect the connection#
Section titled “In Operately: inspect the connection#”Open the intended company, then select Avatar menu → MCP Connections. Compare Server URL with your client’s configured URL.
You do not need to revoke an active connection before signing in again. Revoke a connection only when you want to stop its access.
In your AI client: reconnect#
Section titled “In your AI client: reconnect#”- Open your client’s connection settings and sign in to Operately again. Complete authorization for the intended company.
- If it still fails, restart the MCP connection if your client offers that option. Otherwise, quit and reopen the app.
- Start a new chat if the existing one still fails.
Restarting alone cannot renew expired or revoked credentials. Signing in again also ends previous MCP sessions for the same connection, so other open sessions may need to reconnect.
If a startup warning names a server you do not use, disable it in your client’s settings.
Check that recovery worked#
Section titled “Check that recovery worked#”Ask the client to read a project or another item you already have access to. A successful login message alone does not confirm that the connection works.
If it still fails, share the client name and version, server URL, exact error, and recovery steps you tried with support.
