Write Markdown content with the CLI

CLI fields shown as <markdown> in command help accept formatted text. You can pass short content directly or load longer content from a file.

Use the field’s flag, such as --content:

Terminal window
operately documents create_document \
--space-id YOUR_SPACE_ID \
--name "Launch plan" \
--content 'The launch is **ready for review**.'

Save your Markdown in guide.md, then pass its path with --content-file:

Terminal window
operately documents create_document \
--space-id YOUR_SPACE_ID \
--name "Launch plan" \
--content-file ./guide.md

Other Markdown fields use their corresponding file flag. For example, update a project description with:

Terminal window
operately projects update_description \
--project-id YOUR_PROJECT_ID \
--description-file ./guide.md

Use command-specific help to find the flags a command accepts.

Use headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, links, bulleted and numbered lists, blockquotes, inline code, and fenced code blocks. Task lists and pipe tables are also supported:

## Launch checklist
- [x] Review the plan
- [ ] Publish the guide
| Milestone | Status |
| --- | --- |
| **Launch** | Ready |
| Review | In progress |

Task-list checkboxes stay in the document’s text; they do not create project tasks.

Inside cells, you can use inline formatting, links, escaped pipes (\|), and <br> line breaks. Short rows are padded with empty cells; rows with more cells than the header cause an error.

Table widths and alignment are not preserved. Images inside cells become labeled links, and mentions retain their text without linking to a person. See Export document as Markdown for export behavior.

Table input requires a CLI newer than 1.9.0 and a server version with table support. See Install and update the CLI.
