Import company data

Importing a company loads an exported ZIP package into an Operately instance, recreating the company with all its data including spaces, projects, goals, tasks, discussions, and files.

Prerequisites#

You need a completed export ZIP file from the source Operately instance. See Export company data for instructions on how to create one.

How to import company data#

  1. From the Operately Lobby, click Create Organization.

  2. At the bottom of the form, click the link Import it here.

  3. Under the Package section, click Choose ZIP and select the export file from your computer.

  4. Wait for the file to finish uploading. The status badge changes to Uploaded and the progress bar completes.

  5. Click the Start import button.

  6. Monitor the progress — a percentage and the current step are displayed as the import runs.

  7. Once the status changes to completed, click Open company to enter the newly imported company.

Things to know#

  • Import runs asynchronously in the background — the page updates automatically every few seconds.
  • A history of all import runs is shown below the package upload section.
  • The imported company will be available at the Operately Lobby, just like any other company.
  • To create the export ZIP in the first place, see Export company data.

Version compatibility#

Importing an export package into a different Operately version may fail. Keep the following in mind:

  • Self-hosted to self-hosted: both the source and destination installations should run the same Operately version before exporting and importing.
  • Cloud to self-hosted (or vice versa): the Operately cloud always runs the latest version. Make sure your self-hosted installation is updated to the latest version before performing the migration. See Update a self-hosted installation.
